De La Salle flexed its might and rolled past University of East, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19, to stay unscathed in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Saturday, March 7.
With Shevana Laput back in the starting unit, the Lady Spikers, as expected, unleashed their ferocity right away, sparked by Angel Canino and Lilay Del Castillo, then relied on their defense in the following frames to keep the Lady Warriors at bay.
The straight-set victory strengthened La Salle’s hold of No. 1 with a 5-0 win-loss card, while the slumping UE, which dropped to 0-6, extended its losing slide to 20 straight games – a misfortune that started since the opening round of Season 87.
The Lady Spikers also remained as the only unbeaten team so far, ahead of reigning champion National University Lady Bulldogs (4-1), the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws (3-2), and the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons (3-1).
Canino starred anew with 12 points off 10 attacks and two blocks along with four excellent digs and eight excellent receptions, while Del Castillo and Laput conspired for 19 points.
It marked Laput's return after missing two straight games for the Ramil De Jesus-mentored crew with coaches stressing that the 6-foot-2 outside hitter was under the weather in the past few days.
Amie Provido added seven points, while Eshana Nunag collected 21 excellent sets and four points for the Taft-based squad, which battles Adamson this Wednesday, March 11, at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Khy Cepada carried UE once more after finishing with 14 points, four digs, and eight receptions, while Bea Zamudio chipped in nine points which all went down to the drain.
Cepada and Co. hope to break their long drought when the Lady Warriors clash with fellow winless, the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Saturday, March 14, also at Mall of Asia Arena.
