Quezon City 4th district Rep. Jesus "Bong" Suntay became Filipino netizens' favorite punching bag after making inappropriate comments about actress-model Anne Curtis, but at least one former colleague of the beleaguered solon claimed that what happened was "out of character".
Former Bagong Henerasyon (BH) Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera said on Saturday, March 7 that the incident was particularly surprising given her long professional association with Suntay.
“I have known Bong for the past 25 years, since we served together in the Quezon City Council in 2001, which is why his remarks were both bewildering and out of character,” she shared.
She noted that Suntay had previously supported several pro-women measures in Quezon City, including ordinances against gender-based harassment and policies promoting gender equality and welfare programs for women.
Suntay is facing disciplinary proceedings before the Committee on Ethics and Privileges. Last week, in a Committee on Justice hearing, he made remarks that allegedly "objectified" Curtis.
Herrera, a principal of the Safe Spaces Act that had been alluded to a great deal following the incident, didn't condone the congressman's actions.
“As one of the authors of the Safe Spaces Act, I firmly believe that respect and dignity for women must always be upheld. What Bong Suntay said was clearly inappropriate, and it is right that such remarks are called out,” Herrera said.
“Objectifying women—whether in jest or otherwise—has no place in our society,” she underscored.
However, Herrera said accountability should also leave room for reflection and improvement, noting that individuals can learn from their mistakes.
“At the same time, we must also recognize that people are capable of reflection and growth. Congressman Suntay has learned his lesson the hard way, and we should allow room for accountability and change,” she said.
The ex-congresswoman said the broader public discussion should ultimately reinforce respect while encouraging unity at a time when the country faces many pressing challenges.
“In a time when our country faces many serious challenges—from global tensions in the Middle East to economic pressures and deep political divisions—perhaps it is time to acknowledge the mistake, accept the lesson learned, and move forward with greater respect and unity,” she said.
