Golden Spikers clip Falcons to go four in a row; La Salle scores breakthrough win

University of Santo Tomas cruised to a 25-16, 25-20, 25-22 win over Adamson to go four in a row in the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Saturday, March 7.
The Golden Spikers flashed their fiery form and dismantled the Soaring Falcons, especially in the second and third sets, with Josh Ybañez, JJ Macam, and Dux Yambao delivering the goods anew en route to their fourth straight win after stumbling in their opening game.
UST now hiked its record 4-1 for a share of the second spot with reigning champion National University, both behind unblemished Far Eastern University (5-0). Adamson sustained its fourth defeat in five outings.
“We have tougher matches ahead [and] at least, 4-1 kami ngayon, performance-wise, maraming pagkukulang today. I listed three things before the match, parang isa lang 'yong na-checkan doon,” said UST head coach Odjie Mamon. “Hopefully, yung next matches namin, ma-fulfill namin yung mga objectives namin.”
Ybañez, league’s two-time Most Valuable Player, starred with 15 points off 12 attacks, one block, and two aces on top of one excellent dig and 13 excellent receptions. Macam and Trevor Valera added 12 and nine points, respectively.
Yambao, for his part, listed 21 excellent sets for UST, which tangles with University of the Philippines this Wednesday, March 11, at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, where Adamson also seeks a bounce-back win against De La Salle University.
Richard Besorio paced the San Marcelino-based squad with seven points in a losing effort as there was no Adamson player who reached double-digit scoring.
Meanwhile, La Salle vented its ire and notched its first victory this season after spoiling Raquim Aceron’s 30-point explosion to beat University of the East, 27-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-17.
After slipping in their last four contests, the Green Spikers were out to regain their winning ways and the troika of Chris Hernandez, Issa Ousseini, and Eugene Gloria answered the call by spearheading their assault to traverse a bumpy third set off the Red Warriors’ superb fightback.
La Salle’s first win this year helped it jump to seventh place with a 1-4 card, just a few yards ahead of UE (1-5), which became dead last.
Hernandez and Gloria topscored for the Green Spikers with 17 and 15, with Ousseini also unloading 15 points. On the other hand, Aceron stood out with 30 points on 27 kills, one block, and two aces that went with one dig and 21 excellent receptions which all went down the drain.
UE eyes a rebound against Ateneo next Saturday, March 14, at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
