In a statement, the Municipality of Binangonan said that the affected stalls covered an estimated 1,500 square meters of the market. It added that no casualties or injuries were reported.
Based on the investigation by the Binangonan Municipal Police Station (Binangonan MPS), vendors and market personnel first noticed thick smoke and flames coming from a stall in the section of the market selling eggs, plastic plates, cups, spoons, forks, fruits, and vegetables.
Due to the presence of highly combustible materials such as plastic wares and other market goods, the fire quickly spread to nearby stalls, causing damage to merchandise and stall structures.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the fire started at around 8 p.m. and escalated to a third alarm by 8:28 p.m. It was declared under control at around 10:16 p.m.
Authorities are still investigating the fire, with faulty wiring considered a possible cause.
The local government immediately held a meeting to strengthen urgent measures and provide support to those affected. In addition, it coordinated with the Provincial Government of Rizal, led by Gov. Nina Ynares, and with Rizal’s 1st District Rep. Mia Ynares to report the situation and foster broader cooperation for the market’s rehabilitation.
As immediate relief measures, the municipal government said that cash assistance will be provided to help vendors restart their businesses. Stall owners and ambulant vendors will also be temporarily exempted from paying their monthly fees.
It added that Phase 6 and part of the tiangge area will be designated as temporary spaces for those who wish to continue selling.
The Engineering Office is conducting clearing operations and marking temporary stalls to facilitate the orderly relocation of those affected.
“Sa ating mga kababayang naapektuhan, nais naming iparating na hindi kayo nag-iisa. Ang Pamahalaang Bayan ay kasama ninyo sa bawat hakbang ng pagbangon. Tinitiyak namin na tuloy-tuloy ang aksyon. Hindi po rito nagtatapos ang aming pagtugon (To our fellow citizens affected by the fire, we want to assure you that you are not alone. The municipal government stands with you every step of the way in your recovery. We assure you that our response continues and does not end here),” the local government said.
Strengthening safety measures
Meanwhile, the local government said that several measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of vendors in the market.
The Engineering Office is also conducting electrical reinstallation and repair of the main wiring to restore power to unaffected areas and prevent potential electrical hazards.
To better protect vendors and the public, the local government said that additional fire hydrants are being installed, water tanks refilled, fire trucks positioned around the market, and fire extinguishers placed at every stall. The sale of firecrackers and other highly flammable materials is also being prohibited.
“Patuloy ang koordinasyon ng lahat ng tanggapan, ang monitoring sa sitwasyon, at ang pagpapatupad ng mga kinakailangang hakbang upang mapalakas ang kaligtasan ng ating pamilihan at mga kababayan. Makakaasa po kayo na ang Pamahalaang Bayan ay mananatiling nakatuon, kikilos, at tutugon para sa kapakanan ng mga naapektuhan (All municipal offices continue to coordinate, monitor the situation, and implement necessary measures to strengthen the safety of our market and community. You can be assured that the Municipal Government will remain committed, take action, and respond to the needs of those affected),” it vowed.
