De La Salle University seeks to stretch its hot start when it stakes its unblemished record against University of the East for a solid hold of the lead in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Saturday, March 6.
Coming off a week-long break and a four-set win over archrival Ateneo Blue Eagles, the Lady Spikers target their fifth consecutive win against a hapless Lady Warriors side which is still looking to clinch a breakthrough victory. Match is set at 1 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Shai Nitura-led Adamson Lady Falcons and the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses, who are looking to extend their win streak to three games, clash at 3 pm.
Angel Canino, one of the top spikers in the league, is leading the Taft-based squad in its mission to reclaim the throne with the help of Lilay Del Castillo and the rest of the team.
As Shevana Laput’s return remains uncertain, Canino and Del Castillo, alongside Amie Provido, Shane Reterta, Ella De Guzman, Mikee Santos, and Eshana Nunag banner the Ramil De Jesus-mentored crew anew for its 5-0 bid that will put them ahead of reigning champion National University (4-1)
The Lady Warriors, on the other hand, are eager to cut their string of losses, a painful 19th consecutive defeat that started since the opening round of Season 87.
Fueled by their long drought, power hitters Khy Cepada, Nessa Bangayan, and Bea Zamudio are out to give UE its first taste of triumph as they look to pull off a stunner against the unscathed La Salle.
Meanwhile, host UST eyes to go above .500 when it tangles with fellow Final Four hopeful Adamson, which came from a 25-22, 28-30, 17-25, 20-25 loss to FEU last weekend.
Boosted by their convincing sweep of the Lady Warriors, the Tigresses lean on their main gunners once more in Angge Poyos and Reg Jurado, who also get their support from Avril Bron, Jonna Perdido, Marga Altea, Cassie Carballo, and Detdet Pepito, while the Falcons tap Nitura and Frances Mordi as the lethal duo try to lift Adamson back on the winning track.
In the men’s action, UE (1-4) and La Salle (0-4) duke it out at 9 a.m. with the latter going for its first win, while UST (3-1) guns for its fourth straight victory against Adamson (1-3) in their 11 a.m. showdown.
