Getting across EDSA through the old Kamuning footbridge dubbed as "Mt. Kamuning" felt more like hiking than merely crossing a pedestrian overpass, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos said.
The First Lady made the statement a day after she accompanied President Marcos in scaling the old and steep foot bridge located in Kamuning, Quezon City on Thursday, March 5.
"Before, many commuters called the old footbridge here 'Mt. Kamuning.' One look at those endless steps and you'd understand why. As I was climbing it, it felt more like hiking than crossing the street," the First Lady said in a Facebook post on Friday, March 6.
Prior to inspecting the newly-built Kamuning footbridge and Busway station last Friday, the First Lady, the President, and their son Vinny climbed the infamous footbridge.
After crossing via the old footbridge, the President said, "The old one is not very good at all," emphasizing that the new footbridge is better and was made more accessible, including for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
"Today, things are different," the First Lady said about opening the replacement to the old footbridge. "The new Kamuning Footbridge and Busway Station makes crossing EDSA safer, easier, and more accessible for everyone, especially for seniors, PWDs, pregnant women, and parents with children. With elevators, better access to the busway, and a more commuter-friendly design," she said.
"Sometimes progress is simple. Fewer steps, safer crossings, and a little less struggle in the everyday journey home," she added.
The President also made the same remark about climbing the footbridge in a post on social media.
"Goodbye, Mt. Kamuning. No more exhausting climb just to cross EDSA," Marcos said.
"What used to feel like climbing a mountain is now a smoother, safer crossing for the thousands of commuters who pass through here every day," the President added.
The Kamuning Footbridge and Busway Station Project forms part of the EDSA Busway System modernization—one of the flagship public transportation programs of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), implemented in coordination with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The project covers the integrated rehabilitation of the Kamuning Busway Station and the construction of a new pedestrian footbridge, designed to function as a seamless, intermodal access facility improving commuter safety, accessibility, and transfer efficiency along EDSA.
