Cordillera logs P122-M damage from 288 fire incidents in 2025

BAGUIO CITY – The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in the Cordillera region logged a total of 288 fire incidents in 2025.
Citing the agency's latest data, Fire Insp. Katherine Albino, BFP-Cordillera chief operations officer and information officer, said Friday that these fire incidents incurred P122.89-million worth of damage, mostly on structures.
Of the figure, P116.39 million damage was due to structural fires, P3.18 million from non-structural fires, and P3.32 million from transport fires.
For the first two months of 2026, fire incidents in the region nearly doubled to 85 from 43 in the same period last year.
Albino said the top causes of fire were open flames – from cooking using Liquified Petroleum Gas or firewood, electrical ignition caused by arcing, electrical ignition caused by loose connection, overheated home appliances, and open flame from unattended lighted candles.
Benguet recorded the most fire incidents, she added.
Meanwhile, Fire Chief Supt. Robert Pacis, deputy director for operations of the BFP national headquarters, said they are currently completing the training of all personnel who will man the fire choppers they will acquire.
“The purchase is in the pipeline, we are just completing the training of the personnel in Camp Crame,” he said, adding that the choppers would also be used for air medical transport.
He said these choppers are fit for the region's topography, especially in extinguishing forest fires.
“Forest fires occur in areas inaccessible to the road, making it difficult to suppress them. The fire chopper will be very useful to the Cordillera and other parts of the country with mountainous terrains,” said Pacis, who served as BFP-Cordillera director for more than four years before his designation to the central office.
