Where Quezon City 4th district Rep. Jesus "Bong" Suntay has failed, Akbayan Party-list Rep. Dadah Ismula wants the true gentlemen in the House of Representatives to succeed.
Ismula urged on Thursday, March 5 her male colleagues in the 300-plus strong legislative chamber to join congresswomen in upholding a culture of respect following the recent controversial remarks made by Suntay.
The neophyte party-list solon noted that the protection of women was a shared value deeply rooted in the families of every Filipino lawmaker.
"Ang respeto sa bawat isa ay hindi lamang isyu ng kababaihan, kundi pagpapakita ng pagmamahal natin sa ating sariling mga ina at kapatid (Respect for each other is not just a women's issue, but a reflection of our love for our own mothers and sisters)," she added.
During a public hearing of the House Committee on Justice on Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment complaints Wednesday, March 4, Suntay made a statement wherein he sounded like he was objectifying popular showbiz personality Anne Curtis.
Suntay has since apologized, saying he merely used Curtis to illustrate a point that mere "desire" and "imagination" cannot equate to an actual offense.
Ismula expressed her gratitude to the many congressmen who have already voiced their support for a professional and gender-sensitive working environment.
"Nagpapasalamat ako sa ating mga kasamahang congressmen na tumayo na para ipagtanggol ang dangal ng ating mga kabaro (I thank our male colleagues who stood up first to defend the dignity of our fellow women)," she said.
She asked for Congress’ collective stand to ensure that no person feels belittled or harassed within the halls of Congress, abiding by the Bawal Bastos Act.
"Sana ay magkaisa tayo bilang mga lingkod bayan ng Kongreso na hindi hinahayaang mabalewala ang pagkatao ng kahit sinong babae (I hope we can unite as one family here in Congress that does not allow the dignity of any woman to be disregarded)," Ismula concluded.
