A man was arrested after making a “bomb joke” inside an establishment in Ermita, Manila, causing alarm and confusion among people in the area, authorities said.
According to the Manila Police District (MPD), the suspect reportedly warned others not to touch his bag while inside the establishment, saying, “Huwag galawin ang bag ko, may bomba (Don’t touch my bag, there’s a bomb in it).”
The remark immediately caused panic among bystanders, prompting security personnel to intervene.
The suspect was quickly restrained by establishment guards and subsequently taken into custody by responding police officers.
Authorities emphasized that bomb jokes are not taken lightly under Philippine law.
Under Presidential Decree No. 1727, making false bomb threats or jokes in public places and transportation hubs is strictly prohibited.
The Manila Police District reminded the public that violators may face serious penalties, including imprisonment of up to five years, a fine of at least P40,000, or both upon conviction.
Police officials reiterated their warning that what may seem like a joke can quickly trigger fear, disrupt public order, and lead to criminal charges.
“Bomb jokes are not funny and should never be treated as such,” authorities said, urging the public to be mindful of their words, especially in crowded public spaces.
