Citing the progress in the construction of a new footbridge and busway in Kamuning, Quezon City, President Marcos expressed satisfaction with the project, emphasizing that it proves such improvements can indeed be accomplished.
An improved footbridge and a busway station form part of a public transport network in Kamuning, Quezon City, where the MRT-3 Kamuning Station is also located.
The project—EDSA Busway System modernization— is more practical and provides ease to Filipino commuters, Marcos said, citing the steep old Kamuning footbridge dubbed as "Mt. Kamuning."
"The old one is not very good at all," the President said.
"At saka hindi mo ma-realize pag nandito ka sa baba, gumagalaw pala 'yan pag may dumadaan. Kaya't mas mabuti-buti na ito. That's why the first time that we saw it, noong in-inspection namin yung MRT ay sabi ko talagang hindi praktikal yung kanilang ginawa (And you won’t realize it when you’re down here, but it actually moves when something passes by. So this is much better. That’s why the first time we saw it, when we inspected the MRT, I said that what they did was really not practical)," he added.
Marcos said that with the existence of the new project, commuters and pedestrians will no longer have to go through the steep stairs, adding that the project also features an elevator and a wheelchair lift, which he said must always be working.
He further commended the project's progress, which was initially set to take six months to finish but was delivered in only four months.
He stressed that the improvements made were imperative as the busway station and MRT-3 Kamuning Station cater to about 750,000 commuters daily.
"Kaya ngayon mas mababa na ang aakyatin na hagdan, tapos meron nang elevator para yung mga hindi kayang umakyat ng hagdan. Meron pa tayong wheelchair lift na ginawa para sa mga naka-wheelchair, pati wheelchair, we provided a wheelchair para mas magaan naman ang pagiging commuting experience (Now there are fewer stairs to climb, and there is already an elevator for those who cannot go up the stairs. We also installed a wheelchair lift for people using wheelchairs, and we even provided wheelchairs to make the commuting experience a little easier)," Marcos said.
"So far, I'm happy to see that this is the sort of thing--ito naman ay kaya naman pa lang gawin, hindi naman ganoon kahirap basta't desidido tayo na ayusin natin ang commuter experience dahil ang dumadaan sa bus pa lang...the MRT and bus, 750,000 ang gumagamit niyan everyday (It’s not really that difficult, as long as we are determined to improve the commuter experience. For the buses alone, together with the MRT, about 750,000 people use them every day)," Marcos added.
The President recognized that commuting in the metropolis is already a daily challenge, and the least the government can do is to address these daily struggles.
"Mapagaan lang nang kaunting ang kanilang—mahirap na nga mag-commute, mahaba, mainit e, sabi ko dapat naman tugunan natin yung pang araw araw na dinadaanan ng ating mga kababayan para makapunta sa trabaho at para makauwi (If we can just make their situation a little easier—commuting is already difficult, it’s long and hot, so I said we should address the daily struggles our fellow citizens face just to get to work and return home)," Marcos said.
"Kaya't mabuti naman at sa apat na buwan may nakita na tayong panibagong na facilities na mas magpapagaan sa commuting experience (It’s good that in four months we already have new facilities that will make commuting easier)," he added.
The Chief Executive vowed that the improvements made in Kamuning "is just one part of the effort." The next step, he said, is to make sure that everything here is properly maintained.
He also said that the steep "Mt. Kamuning," which he previously ordered to be replaced, will be totally torn down.
"Wala na yung Mt. Kamuning. Tatanggalin na namin yang Mt. Kamuning para tuloy tuloy na ito na lamang ang gagamitin (Mt. Kamuning will also be gone. We will remove Mt. Kamuning so that this new facility will be the one people will use continuously)," Marcos said.
During the inspection on Thursday, March 5, Marcos, along with First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and their son, Vinny, scaled the infamous Mt. Kamuning footbridge.
The Kamuning Footbridge and Busway Station Project forms part of the EDSA Busway System modernization—one of the flagship public transportation programs of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), implemented in coordination with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The project covers the integrated rehabilitation of the Kamuning Busway Station and the construction of a new pedestrian footbridge, designed to function as a seamless, intermodal access facility improving commuter safety, accessibility, and transfer efficiency along EDSA.
