The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Thursday, March 5, warned the public against a Facebook group posing as an official source of information on the travel clearance for minors, saying the page has no affiliation with the agency.
The group, named “DSWD Travel Clearance,” uses the logo of the DSWD’s Minors Traveling Abroad (MTA) program as its cover photo, which may mislead the public into believing it is an official platform.
DSWD Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Irene Dumlao clarified that the department does not manage or authorize any information being shared in the Facebook group.
“We do not control the information circulating there, so the public should not immediately believe those offering help or assistance inside the group,” she said in Filipino.
According to the DSWD, the page contains posts from parents and individuals asking for advice on traveling abroad with their children, as well as testimonials endorsing people who claim to help process travel clearance requirements.
However, the agency stressed that it does not verify the reminders, tips, or other information being shared within the group.
“There is nothing wrong with having a platform where beneficiaries can ask questions or raise concerns. What is worrisome is that misunderstandings may arise because information in an unverified Facebook group may not align with the rules of the MTA program,” Dumlao pointed out.
The DSWD urged the public to rely only on its official communication channels for accurate information about the MTA program and other services.
Clients may also coordinate with DSWD field offices, as well as municipal and city social welfare and development offices, for assistance.
It also reminded the public that the agency does not charge fees for providing assistance in completing documents and requirements for travel clearance.
“The DSWD does not tolerate fixers who offer such services in exchange for payment and these acts are punishable under existing laws,” Dumlao said.
