Sam Cantada’s absence was hardly felt as reigning champion National University cruised into a commanding 25-19, 25-10, 25-19 win over University of the East to get back on the winning track of the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday, March 4.
Even without their prized rookie, the Lady Bulldogs managed to impose their will, with Celine Marsh anchoring the offense to complete a sweep and hand the Lady Warriors their 19th consecutive defeat since last season's opener.
NU surely moved on from its five-set setback to University of the Philippines as it now hiked its tally to 4-1 for a solo No. 2 seat, while UE absorbed its fifth loss in as many outings to stay at the bottom of the standings.
Arah Panique led the charge with 12 points on 10 attacks and two blocks, while Alinsug added 10 points on top of seven excellent digs and seven excellent receptions. Alexa Mata and Chams Maaya conspired for 12 points.
But Marsh took the spotlight all after listing 11 points with 12 digs and four receptions, stepping up for Cantada, who is resting after her right shin injury in the Lady Bulldogs’ game against the Fighting Maroons last weekend.
“What I can say today, ‘yong teamwork po talaga namin ‘yong nagawa namin sa loob ng court, especially ng set one… ‘yong mindset lang namin talaga na ilaban namin talaga,” said Marsh. “Yong mindset ko lang po is ilaro ‘yong laro ko po at mag-step up.”
According to NU head coach Regine Diego, Cantada, who was seen on the sidelines, is currently recovering after undergoing an MRI last weekend and the rookie standout might play in their next game.
“Sam is doing fine, she’s resting and hopefully we'll see her in our next game,” said Diego.
Diego likewise credited Marsh, emphasizing the team’s depth and its capacity to step up in a teammate’s absence.
“And with Cel’s [Marsh] performance, I never really doubted… like malaking nawawala if may isang player na ‘di makalaro, because I know somebody else can help the team out. Tulungan lang talaga kami," she added.
Nessa Bangayan and Khy Cepada posted 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Bea Zamudio logged seven points, which all went down the drain as UE stretched its string of losses.
NU seeks to replicate its spectacular game when it goes against Ateneo on Sunday, March 8, at the Big Dome, while UE hopes to break through triumph against an unscathed De La Salle side Saturday, March 7, also at the same venue.
