Far Eastern University finally broke its trend of win-loss run after denying Ateneo’s final salvo in the third, 25-17, 25-17, 26-24, for its first back-to-back victories in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday, March 4.
Following their great acts in the first two frames, the Lady Tamaraws lost their steam in the next canto, but managed to claw back from 17-22 deficit with Lovely Lopez, Jaz Ellarina, and Tin Ubaldo orchestrating a 9-2 blitz that turned to be another heartbreaker for the Blue Eagles.
During that rally, Ateneo dug deep from its arsenals yet couldn’t sustain its counter as FEU stole the tempo en route to a come-from-behind set victory that closed out the match.
Besides boosting its record to 3-2 at No. 4, FEU also denied Ateneo’s attempt of clinching its first win this season as the Sergio Veloso-mentored crew dropped to 0-5 and tied with University of the East.
Skipper Ubaldo finished with 14 excellent sets and nine excellent digs on top of four points, while Faida Bakanke and Jazlyn Ellarina uncorked 12 and 11 points, respectively, for FEU, which tangles with University of the Philippines this Sunday, March 8, at the Big Dome.
Gerz Petallo shone as well with nine points, while Cla Loresco and Lovely Lopez logged eight points apiece for the Lady Tamaraws, who edged the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses (2-2) in the standings.
Zel Tsunashima topped Ateneo’s scoring column with 11 points, while Jihan Chuatico, Zey Pacia, and Ana Hermosura posted seven, six, and five points, respectively, in a losing cause.
The Blue Eagles seek to recover and score their first taste of victory this year when they take on the reigning champion National University Lady Bulldogs also Sunday at the same venue.
