A majority of Filipinos continue to hold traditional views on women’s roles in family life, with 83 percent agreeing that a woman’s job is to look after the home and family, the results of a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released on Wednesday, March 4 showed.
The result was based on the Fourth Quarter 2025 Social Weather Survey conducted from Nov. 24 to 30, which measured public opinion on women’s work and family responsibilities.
To the statement, “A man’s job is to earn money; a woman’s job is to look after home and family,” 83 percent agreed, 8 percent disagreed, and 9 percent were undecided, yielding a net agreement score of +75, classified by SWS as “extremely strong.”
This was higher than the +69 recorded in September 2021.
The survey also found that 81 percent agreed with the statement, “Being a housewife is just as fulfilling as working for pay,” while 11 percent disagreed and 7 percent were undecided, for a net agreement score of +71. This was up from +67.
Moreover, 75 percent agreed that “a job is all right, but what most women really want is a home and children,” while 14 percent disagreed and 10 percent were undecided, resulting in a net agreement score of +60. It was up from +53.
On views regarding working mothers, 71 percent agreed that “a working mother can establish just as warm and secure a relationship with her children as a mother who does not work,” while 18 percent disagreed and 10 percent were undecided, for a net agreement score of +53, up from +48.
Meanwhile, 63 percent agreed with the statement that “a pre-school child is likely to suffer if his or her mother works,” while 27 percent disagreed and 9 percent were undecided, resulting in a net agreement score of +37, down from +54.
Half of respondents, or 51 percent, agreed that “all in all, family life suffers when the woman has a full-time job,” while 36 percent disagreed and 12 percent were undecided, producing a net agreement score of +16, hardly moving from +21.
Men vs women
SWS reported higher net agreement among women than men on several statements.
On the view that being a housewife is as fulfilling as paid work, net agreement among women reached +74, compared with +67 among men.
Women also registered higher agreement that a pre-school child may suffer if the mother works, with a net agreement of +46 compared with +28 among men.
For the statement that family life suffers when a woman has a full-time job, net agreement remained moderately strong among women at +27 but declined to near-neutral levels among men at +4.
However, men and women showed similar levels of agreement on the statement assigning men the role of earning money and women the role of looking after the home and family, with net agreement scores of +77 among men and +73 among women.
Both sexes also recorded identical net agreement of +60 on the statement that most women want a home and children, and similar levels of agreement that working mothers can maintain warm relationships with their children.
The nationwide survey interviewed 1,200 adults aged 18 and above through face-to-face interviews, with 300 respondents each from Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.
