No major damage was recorded in the province and city of Iloilo from the magnitude-4.8 earthquake on Monday night, March 2.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology initially recorded the earthquake at magnitude-five with the epicenter in the sea of Tigbauan, a town in southern Iloilo province.
Phivolcs later downgraded it to magnitude-4.8 earthquake and changed the epicenter into the neighboring town of Guimbal.
The Iloilo provincial government and the Iloilo City government noted only minor damages.
In Iloilo City, cracks were reported at the facade of the new Iloilo Central Market built by SM Prime Holdings Inc., which was given a 25-year lease agreement by the Iloilo City government.
The market’s original art deco structure that dates back to the American colonial period was demolished in March 2024 to pave way for an entirely new structure, of which half has been turned into an SM mini mall.
Cracks were reported in houses in Tigbauan, Guimbal, and Igbaras.
