Gabriela Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago doesn't appreciate her House Minority Bloc colleague Quezon City 4th district Rep. Jesus "Bong" Suntay's rather inappropriate remarks about showbiz personality Anne Curtis, and wants him to apologize for it.
"Hindi katanggap-tanggap ang kanyang pahayag at dapat siya maglabas ng public apology. Ang pagbabahagi ng kanyang imahinasyon tungkol sa isang babae—anumang dahilan—ay tahasang pambabastos at pag-objectify sa kababaihan," Elago said in a statement Tuesday night, March 3.
(His statement is unacceptable, and he should issue a public apology. Sharing his imagination about a woman—for whatever reason—is outright disrespectful and objectifies women.)
"We stand firmly with women in denouncing this behavior from those in positions of power. There is no place for sexism and objectification of women by public officials. We will continue to demand respect, uphold women’s dignity, and push for accountability," stressed the Makabayan lawmaker.
Earlier that day, in the hearing of the House Committee on Justice on the impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte, Suntay casually said in a manifestation: "Lastly, alam niyo minsan, nasa Shangri-La ako, nakita ko si Anne Curtis, ang ganda-ganda pala niya. You know, may desire sa loob ko na, nag-init talaga, na-imagine ko na lang kung ano’ng pwedeng mangyari. Pero syempre hanggang imagination na lang ‘yon. Pero ‘di naman siguro ako pwedeng kasuhan kung ano ang na-imagine ko eh."
(Lastly, you know, one time I was at Shangri-La and I saw Anne Curtis, she’s really beautiful. Honestly, I felt a strong desire inside, I got heated, and I just imagined what could happen. But of course, it stayed only in my imagination. And I don’t think I could be charged for something I only imagined.)
The deputy minority leader gave these remarks as he was trying to defend Duterte from the allegation of sedition as contained in one of the two remaining complaints.
Needless to say, it upset his fellow House members--both men and women.
Incidentally, the House of Representatives, like the rest of the country, is celebrating Women's Month this March.
'Offensive, uncalled for, irrelevant'
After some resistance from him, Suntay's controversial remarks were eventually stricken out of the record upon the motion of San Juan City lone district Rep. Ysabel Maria Zamora.
Zamora, in a press conference after the justice committee hearing, didn't hold back regarding what she thought of the much older House member's actions.
"There's no need for such comments, in any hearing, anywhere," said the panel vice chairperson.
"It was offensive, uncalled for, and irrelevant...it was very unbecoming for a congresman for him to do that...Hindi dapat nagsasabi ng mga ganung statement (Such statements shouldn't be made at all)," Zamora said.
