16 NIRAAM billeting centers declared safe following earthquake
BACOLOD CITY – Sixteen of the 17 schools used as billeting centers for delegates of the Negros Island Region Athletic Association Meet (NIRAAM) 2026 in this highly-urbanized city was declared safe for occupancy in an assessment ordered by Mayor Greg Gasataya following the magnitude-five earthquake Monday night, March 2.
Engr. Froilan Julag-ay II of the City Engineer's Office said they inspected five educational centers to ensure the safety of delegates – Bacolod Special Education (Sped) Center, Rizal Elementary School, and Education and Training Center School I, II, and III. Julag-ay said the venues were deemed safe.
Other billeting centers were Bacolod City National High School, Luisa Medel National High School, Jose R. Torres Elementary School, Andres Bonifacio Elementary School, Antonio L. Jayme Elementary School, Mansilingan Agro-Industrial High School, Handumanan Elementary School I and II, Silay South Elementary School, Don Hofileña Memorial Integrated School, Silay Sped Center, Rodolfo A. Medel Sr. Elementary School, and MG Medalla Integrated School.
Inspection is pending for the Negros Occidental High School (NOHS).
The Department of Education-Negros Island Region has conducted safety preparations to protect delegates throughout the weeklong sporting event until March 7.
A contingency plan is also in place in coordination with the Office of Civil Defense and other concerned government agencies regarding natural calamities that may affect the event.
