SAGIP Party-list Rep. Paolo Marcoleta tried to do a John Anderton--a memorable role played by Tom Cruise in the 2002 movie Minority Report--during the House Committee on Justice hearing Monday, March 2 on the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.
It didn't go over so well.
In the movie, Anderton served as a specialized police officer who--acting on visions from gifted individuals--arrested perpetrators before they could commit a crime.
Acting on a similar "premonition", Marcoleta sought to have Francis "Kiko" Aquino Dee of Tindig Pilipinas reprimanded by the Batangas 2nd district Rep. Gerville "Jinky Bitrics" Luistro-chaired panel during Monday's proceedings.
"I observed the presence of Mr. Kiko Dee from the audience. Though he was allowed to be an audience in the proceedings despite his withdrawal of the second impeachment complaint, I suggest that he observe proper decorum," Marcoleta told the panel.
"I'm just speaking from experience...," Marcoleta continued, to which Luistro interjected, "Which means he hasn't committed any [offense] yet?"
"Not yet, but as a forwarn[ing], as a premoni[tion], or a warning, he--during the archiving of the impeachment at the Senate, Mr. Dee...during the archiving of the impeachment, he booed, and made a gesture of thumbs down at the VIP gallery of the Senate," the SAGIP solon said with a straight face.
The live feed of the hearing showed the people around Marcoleta--fellow solons and staff members--giggling over his rationale for the committee to scold Dee.
"All right, honorable Marcoleta, it is apparent that the honorable Dee hasn't committed anything yet, which is not consistent to decorum," Luistro said.
In a manifestation in response to Marcoleta, Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima said it was "completely improper" for her colleague to bring up the matter.
"He has not cited any act of misconduct or misbehaviour on the part of Mr. Kiko Dee," she said.
ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio made a similar interjection for Marcoleta to leave Dee alone, the premonition notwithstanding.
De Lima subsequently moved to strike out Marcoleta's remarks, and it was promptly carried by the committee.
Marcoleta is the son of Senator Rodante Marcoleta.
