DAVAO CITY – The P2.07-billion Maa-Magtuod flyover on Carlos P. Garcia Highway officially opened to motorists on Monday, offering relief from heavy traffic congestion in the area, officials announced.
The flyover, located at the junction of C.P. Garcia Highway and Maa Road, is considered a vital infrastructure project for the city. Construction began in 2020 but faced delays due to right-of-way issues and the relocation of utility poles and transmission lines.
"There was a big challenge on the road right-of-way, but what matters is that we were able to resolve it," Dean Ortiz, spokesperson of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Region 11 (DPWH-11), said in an interview.
Ortiz clarified that while the flyover is now operational, work continues on the widening of lanes beneath it.
"It is not yet complete. Part of the project includes road restoration and widening works (two lanes on each side). At present, one lane (on each side) is open to motorists as drainage improvement is ongoing," he said.
DPWH-11 expects full completion of the project within the year.
Ortiz expressed optimism that the flyover will significantly ease traffic congestion in Davao City.
"We thank everyone for their patience and understanding during the past few years of construction," he said, urging motorists to observe traffic rules and regulations, especially speed limits. (PNA)
