Manila Doctors Hospital achieves milestone with first Hot Axios WON drainage

Manila Doctors Hospital (MDH), one of the top-tier hospitals in the Philippines, achieved its historic first, elevating Gastrointestinal Care with the institution’s first-ever Hot Axios WON (walled-off necrosis) drainage, performed by one of the hospital’s gastroenterology experts, Dr. Manley Uy. This marks a rare and defining milestone for the Section of Gastrointestinal and Digestive Endoscopy Unit (SGDE) of MDH.
The Hot Axios system is recognized as the first-line treatment for walled-off necrosis (WON). It is a minimally invasive approach with higher technical success, lower morbidity and mortality, and significantly shorter hospital stays compared to surgical or percutaneous methods.
Dr. Uy explained that “the technique, often referred to as the 'step-up approach,’ has become the standard of care by combining precise imaging with specialized equipment to treat complex collections without large incisions or external drains.” Recognized for his expertise in interventional endoscopy, Dr. Uy added that “with this procedure, patients with pseudocyst or walled-off necrosis will be relieved of these complications of pancreatitis in a shorter amount of time.”
This achievement not only highlights a breakthrough for the institution and its Section of Gastrointestinal and Digestive Endoscopy (SGDE) unit but also positions MDH among the rare medical institutions to carry out this advanced intervention. Remarkably, it is recorded that this procedure of WON (walled-off necrosis) drainage using the Axios system is considered only the second of its kind to be performed in the Philippines.
Through innovation, medical excellence, and compassionate care, Manila Doctors Hospital continues to elevate and strengthen its role as one of the leading and trusted medical institutions in the country, offering state-of-the-art medical technology and patient-centric medical care.
