Harvard OPM 36 reunion in the Philippines: A journey of culture, learning, and friendship

FROM THE MARGINS
From Feb. 8 to 14, Mr. Bernie Liu and I had the privilege of co-hosting the Harvard Business School’s OPM 36 Reunion in the Philippines. Harvard’s Owner/President Management (OPM) program is a three-year course designed for business owners and leaders – challenging them to step away from daily operations and prepare their organizations for strategic growth, innovation, and succession. Beyond classroom learning, it helps participants form friendships and networks that continue long after graduation.
I was happy to co-host the reunion with Mr. Liu, founder and executive chairman of Golden ABC, Inc., a leading fashion and lifestyle company in the country. Its portfolio includes brands such as Penshoppe, OXGN, ForMe, Memo, Regatta, and BOCU. Guided by its vision of “Building Brands for the World,” Golden ABC reflects the innovation and leadership that the OPM program seeks to cultivate.
Our reunion brought together 33 participants from 12 countries: 18 classmates, many with their spouses, and one with two children — making it a family affair. This added a special dimension, as cultural immersion and learning were shared not only among alumni but also with their loved ones.
Discovering Manila’s heritage
Our reunion began on Feb. 9 with a cultural tour of old Manila. We explored Intramuros, Fort Santiago, and the Rizal Museum, reflecting on the life and sacrifice of our national hero. Lunch at the historic Manila Hotel included an exclusive visit to the MacArthur Suite, once the residence and office of General Douglas MacArthur. Walking through its grand rooms filled with family and vintage photographs was a moving reminder of history.
That evening, we were welcomed at the Goldenberg Mansion within the Malacañang Grounds. Surrounded by Filipino craftsmanship and political heritage, we enjoyed dinner and a cultural show featuring traditional dances. The highlight was the lively tinikling, where classmates and their families joined in, skillfully navigating moving bamboo poles to everyone’s delight.
Grassroots development in San Pablo
The following day, we traveled to San Pablo City, Laguna to visit CARD MRI, my organization. In Barangay San Gabriel, classmates observed center meetings of women borrowers we affectionately call “Nanays.” These sessions, marked by discipline and community spirit, included prayers, pledges, loan repayments, savings collection, and disaster preparedness education. A 100 percent repayment rate underscored the integrity of the members.
Lunch at CARD MRI Maharlika Building featured indigenous cuisine curated by food historian Ige Ramos, followed by a dialogue with Senator Bam Aquino. He spoke passionately about education, highlighting his advocacy for free tertiary schooling and increased budget for education. He also addressed corruption, emphasizing public vigilance and accountability among government officials. He offered thoughtful insights into the country’s economic direction amid ongoing challenges.
In the afternoon, we visited one of our branches and the “Mga Likha ni Inay” (MNLI) store, which showcases products made by our clients. Here, Marilyn Manila of MNLI explained how we support clients not only through financing but also through marketing and enterprise development. Her presentation highlighted how small entrepreneurs are empowered to bring their products to wider markets, ensuring sustainability and dignity for their families.
We also treated our guests to a quintessential Filipino tradition: riding the jeepney. Dinner at Rico’s Café in Nena’s Sanctuary, hosted by Bernie and his wife Alice, featured cuchinillo (roast suckling pig) as the centerpiece, capping a day of grassroots immersion and warm camaraderie.
Innovation and leadership in business
The next day, Bernie and Alice welcomed us to Golden ABC’s advanced retail plant, where automation and robotics streamline production and distribution. The facility demonstrated how technology is reshaping Philippine retail manufacturing.
Lunch featured talks by Regina Jacinto-Barrientos of PJS Law, Cris Po of Century Pacific, and George Stalk from the U.S. The discussion on leadership succession proved interesting. Cris emphasized early exposure of heirs to business, family constitutions, councils of elders, and transparent communication — critical elements for sustaining legacy and good governance.
Exploring Cebu
The final leg of our reunion took us to Cebu, where we explored coastal scenery and vibrant culinary offerings. Families joined in the tours, making the experience richer as children and spouses discovered Filipino traditions alongside the alumni. From the bustling city to seaside views, Cebu provided the perfect conclusion to a week that blended cultural immersion, business learning, and friendship.
More than a reunion, this gathering was a celebration of bonds forged 21 years ago, enriched by cultural exchange and shared learning. It reminded us of the power of global connections and the pride of showcasing the Philippines to the world.
As Bernie beautifully wrote: “We conclude our HBS OPM 36 2026 reunion with hearts full of gratitude and joy.” Another alumna, Janet, added: “Although all reunions are memorable, the Philippines experience is at the top! Memories and friendships for a lifetime!”
