DAVAO CITY – A Davao City councilor expressed concern on Monday, March 2, over the ongoing tension in the Middle East, citing the potential impact on civilians, particularly overseas Filipino workers from Davao.
Councilor Rachel Zozobrado, chairwoman of the Committee on Internal Relations, said she is deeply worried about the situation as it affects not only regional stability but also the lives of many Filipinos and Davaoeños working abroad.
“Our foremost concern is the safety and welfare of our fellow Dabawenyos,” Zozobrado said in a text message. “Many of them went there to secure a better future for their families. They must be given immediate and effective assistance and protection.”
Zozobrado said the Davao City government trusts that the Department of Migrant Workers, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Philippine embassies in affected areas are closely monitoring developments and implementing contingency measures.
“At the local level, we stand ready to coordinate with concerned agencies and extend support to affected families here in Davao City,” Zozobrado said.
The councilor called for restraint and dialogue amid the conflict and expressed hope for a peaceful resolution.
“Stability in any region ultimately protects lives, livelihoods, and global security,” she said, adding that peace should remain the shared goal of the international community.
Zozobrado urged continued prayers for the safety of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire, including Filipinos abroad.
Meanwhile, Davao City Information Office head Harvey James Lanticse said the Davao City OFW Families’ Welfare and Crisis Center is closely monitoring the situation.
Lanticse said the crisis center is prepared to assist families of Davaoeño OFWs who may be affected.
Families may contact the OFW Families’ Welfare and Crisis Center through its 24/7 hotline at 0972-996-6520, telephone number (082) 295-3500, email [email protected], or through its official Facebook page OFW Families’ Welfare and Crisis Center Davao City.
