DAVAO CITY – The 89th Araw ng Dabaw formally opened Sunday night, March 1, with a tribute to the centennial of Davao City Hall, highlighted by a projection show and cultural performances at Quezon Park.
During the opening rites, the city displayed a 3D-mapping image of former President and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte on the City Hall façade, depicting him as the most iconic forefather.
The crowd clapped and chanted his name, repeated his famous line, “Ako’y magpabilin na inyong soluguonon (I will always be at your service),” and some shouted, “Bring him home.”
A full projection presentation marking the 100 years of the City Hall will be shown hourly from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., from March 1 to 31, on the building’s neoclassical façade.
Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo S. Duterte II, on behalf of Mayor Sebastian Duterte, led the launching of the “100 Years City Hall Centennial Stamps” with other city government officials.
In a message read by the vice mayor, Mayor Duterte said the Araw ng Dabaw celebration honors not only the city’s strength, progress, and pride but also its people’s discipline and values.
He noted that the centennial stamp marks “a century of unwavering service, stability, and enduring legacy” established by past leaders, which laid a strong foundation for the city’s development.
The mayor emphasized this year’s theme, “Dabawenyo Ko: Nilambo. Nagkahiusa,” calls on all city residents to continue fostering peace, harmony, and unity.
Mayor Duterte also urged the public to observe local ordinances, including the liquor ban, anti-smoking ordinance, firecracker ban, and speed limit rules, as well as everyday practices such as proper waste disposal and the use of pedestrian lanes.
The month-long Araw ng Dabaw celebration, which opened with live performances and the presentation of the 2026 Mutya ng Dabaw candidates, continues with civic, cultural, and community activities across the city.
Earlier in the morning, organizers launched “Green Rise: Action and Hope for 2028,” described as a nationwide movement anchored on the values of “Tapang at Malasakit.”
A motorcade was held starting at Freedom Park on Roxas St. here, drawing hundreds of participants dressed in green and wearing ribbons as part of the campaign dubbed “Tie Green Ribbons: Tie the Knot of Hope.”
Organizers said the activity aimed to demonstrate solidarity among Filipinos in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, highlighting unity and resilience in the face of national challenges.
