Agimat Party-list has hailed the heroism of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Mary Ann Velasquez De Vera, who unfortunately perished in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
"It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Mary Ann Velasquez De Vera, a Filipina caregiver from Pangasinan who tragically lost her life while helping her employer reach safety amid the conflict in Israel — becoming the first reported Filipino casualty in the recent crisis," the party-list said in a statement on Monday, March 2.
"Her courage, selflessness, and dedication to protecting another in the face of danger exemplify true heroism, and her sacrifice serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and resilience of our kababayans (countrymen) abroad," it added of De Vera.
Agimat's lone representative in the current 19th Congress, Congressman Bryan Revilla, sits as chairman of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs--the panel that works closely with migrant Filipinos all over the world.
"While her passing is deeply unfortunate, her memory will inspire us to continue striving for the protection and safety of all Filipinos wherever they may be," Agimat said.
Citing the developing situation in the Middle East, the group say that it is "confident in the commitment and professionalism of our agencies, and we stand with them as they work to deliver timely, coordinated, and effective assistance to Filipinos who may have been caught in the crossfire".
"For our part, we remain on heightened alert and are continuously monitoring developments as the situation unfolds. Our emergency lines remain open for any overseas Filipino seeking immediate assistance," it further said.
