Sonny Wagdos and Artjoy Torregosa shattered national records at the 2026 Tokyo Marathon on Sunday, March 1.
Wagdos, 32, clocked 2 hours, 14 minutes and 32 seconds to finish the 42.195-kilometer course to break the 22-year-old record of his own coach and two-time Olympian Eduardo ‘Vertek’ Buenavista.
According to World Athletics, Buenavista recorded the feat in the men’s full marathon in February 2004 after finishing the Beppu-Oita Marathon with a time of 2:18:44.
Buenavista’s record was actually broken twice in the same event after Richard Salaño also finished the race with a personal-best of 2:15:08.
“May 2 atleta na na-break ang record ko sa marathon. Maraming salamat sa inyo Sonny at Richard,” wrote Buenavista in a Facebook post.
Their times, of course, are still pending the ratification of the Philippine Athletics and Track and Field Association (PATAFA).
Wagdos ranked 58th in the marathon while Salaño ended at 68th place.
Like Wagdos, Torregosa also put her name in national record books after a run time of 2:33.48 to also eclipse the nine-year national mark set by Mary Joy Tabal.
Tabal had a national record of 2:43:31 which she recorded during the Ottawa Marathon in 2016. Also besting Tabal’s record is Christine Hallasgo, who clocked 2:42:13.
Torregosa finished at the 26th spot while Hallasgo ended at 43rd.
