US Embassy in Qatar issues shelter-in-place order

DOHA/KARACHI – The United States Embassy in Qatar has implemented a shelter-in-place directive for all its personnel, urging American citizens in the country to do the same until further notice, amid heightened regional tensions and expanding airspace disruptions.
In a security advisory posted on its official website, the embassy confirmed that it is taking precautionary measures as instability in the region escalates. Americans in Qatar were advised to seek a secure location within their residence or another safe building, maintain sufficient supplies of food, water, medications, and essential items, and closely monitor local media for updates.
The advisory also instructed US citizens to avoid demonstrations, maintain a low profile, remain aware of their surroundings, keep communication lines open with family and friends, and ensure mobile devices remain charged. The embassy further encouraged enrollment in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive real-time security updates.
The development comes as regional airspace closures linked to Iran-related tensions have begun affecting commercial aviation.
Flight QR935, originally scheduled to operate from Manila to Doha, Qatar, was diverted to Karachi, Pakistan after temporary airspace restrictions were imposed across parts of the Gulf and neighboring regions. The closures were triggered by escalating conflict and heightened security concerns, prompting airlines to reroute aircraft to ensure passenger safety.
Qatar Airways and other international carriers adjusted flight paths and diverted multiple services as several countries temporarily restricted their skies. Aviation authorities cited precautionary measures due to potential airspace risk exposure.
Passengers onboard QR935 were informed mid-flight that the aircraft would be rerouted to Karachi while airlines awaited clearance and confirmation that normal routing could safely resume.
Airlines across the region continue to monitor developments closely, with operations expected to normalize once airspace restrictions are lifted and safety assessments are completed.
Authorities have not announced how long the shelter-in-place advisory or the aviation disruptions will remain in effect. Travelers and residents are advised to stay updated through official government and airline channels as the situation evolves.
