University of Santo Tomas extended its brilliance before its home crowd as it scored a 25-11, 25-14, 25-14 win over University of the East to go two in a row in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila Saturday, Feb. 28.
Buoyed by their last triumph, the Golden Tigresses displayed their firepower anew by dominating in all three sets sparked by Angge Poyos and Reg Jurado.
The España-based squad improved to 2-2 at fifth, while UE absorbed its fourth consecutive loss – 18th overall since the opening round of Season 87.
“Again, happy and proud kasi, slowly nakaka-adapt kami sa bawat isa, sa mga dapat naming gawin,” said UST head coach Shaq Delos Santos. “Ang good thing meron kaming magandang result ngayon, kailangan pa naming magtrabaho marami pa kaming kulang, hopefully, mabuo namin sa mga next games.”
Poyos led UST’s steady offense with 11 points on eight kills, two blocks, and one ace, while Jonna Perdido backed her up with 10 points. Jurado, Avril Bron, and Marga Altea chipped in eight points each. Cassie Carballo shone with 13 excellent sets with five points.
"Tinake-advantage po namin ‘yong home court, nilaro lang namin ‘yong laro namin as a team, nilaro lang namin, para manalo lang kami this game," said Perdido, who finally recovered from her knee injury that sidelined her last year.
There was no double digit scorer for UE as Khy Cepada only posted nine points in a losing cause.
UST goes for its third straight against Adamson Saturday, March 7, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, while UE takes a daunting challenge in defending titlist National University on Wednesday, March 4, at the same venue.
Meanwhile in the men's side, the Josh Ybañez-led UST cruised into its third straight victory after a commanding 25-18, 25-22, 25-22 win against a hapless UE side.
Two-time league MVP Ybañez spearheaded the Golden Spikers’ balanced attack, especially in the second and third sets where they denied the counters from the Red Warriors to secure the solo second spot with a 3-1 card.
Ybañez topscored once more for the Odjie Mamon-mentored crew with 13 points off 11 attacks, one block, and one ace on top of four digs and 11 excellent receptions, while Trevor Valera and Joncriz Ayco added 10 and eight points, respectively.
Also taking the charge for UST, which faces Adamson next Saturday, March 7, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, was Dux Yambao who tallied 17 excellent sets with four points and five digs.
“Sa meeting din namin, sabi ko rin kahapon na mas maganda talaga na lahat kami mag-contribute,” said Yambao. “At least nagawa namin ‘yung sinabi namin kahapon na lahat kami magko-contribute.”
UE (1-3), which is fresh off ending its 23-game slide in its last contest, will try to bounce back against reigning champion NU this Wednesday, March 4.
