University of Santo Tomas is keeping its foot on the ground despite listing two straight wins after a dismal start in the UAAP Season 88 women's volleyball tournament.
Taking lessons from their 0-2 start, the Golden Tigresses sprung back and have now collected two victories, the recent one a 25-11, 25-14, 25-14 triumph over University of the East at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion on Saturday, Feb. 28.
“Malaking factor [‘tong panalo na ‘to] samin, kasi at least parang back to zero, 2-2 na eh, ‘yong mga natitirang games [this round] sobrang importante,” said UST head coach Shaq Delos Santos, the very same mentor that guided the squad to its last and 16th overall title in Season 72 in 2010.
“And siyempre malaking help sa mga players, dahil mabigat ‘yong napagdaan namin, pero naniniwala kasi kami na at the end of the day, pagka trinabaho namin mas mapapalitan ng mas magandang outcome,” he added.
But for Delos Santos, those defeats to the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Spikers have served as a great test for the Tigresses who will battle the Adamson Lady Falcons next Saturday, March 7.
“Ang maganda lang do’n sa first two games namin na-test namin hanggang sa’n ‘yong game namin. That’s why pano kaming magtrabaho ngayon… para makuha ‘yong tamang timpla,” Delos Santos continued.
“Naging inspiration at hugot namin ‘yong first two games namin,” he added.
Both wins were in straight sets, proving UST’s true capability with Angge Poyos, Reg Jurado, and Cassie Carballo at the forefront with ample support by returnees Jonna Perdido and Xyza Gula as well as from Avril Bron and Marga Altea.
The win also boosted the confidence of the unit, especially Perdido who has fully recovered from her ACL injury that sidelined her in the whole Season 87.
“Thankful ako kay coach [Shaq] na binigyan nya ng playing time, ang mindset ko lang is ilabas ‘yong best ko sa floor,” she Perdido as she put up 10 points off five attacks, two blocks, and three blocks with six digs and four receptions.
“Malaking bagay po sya na nakuha po ‘yong kumpiyansa ko ng dahan-dahan, sa next game mag-double or tripleng effort po ako,” she added.
