President Marcos has ordered the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) to ensure the safety of Filipinos in Iran and across the Middle East following reports of airstrikes that struck Tehran.
“We have received reports of airstrikes which hit Iran. We are in the process of getting more information,” he posted on X on Saturday evening, Feb. 28.
“In the meantime, the safety of Filipino citizens in Iran and in the Middle East is paramount. I have instructed the DFA and the DMW to take measures to determine their whereabouts in affected areas and to take immediate measures to ensure their safety,” he added.
The statement came after Israel and the United States reportedly launched attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, prompting fears of a wider regional conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tel Aviv and Washington had “embarked on an operation” against Tehran, while US President Donald Trump confirmed a joint operation aimed at eliminating threats from Iran.
Iranian media reported explosions in areas linked to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, while foreign media outlets said blasts were also heard in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.
Bahrain reportedly confirmed that a US headquarters in its territory was targeted by a missile attack, while Qatar’s Defense Ministry said it intercepted attacks that appeared to be aimed at its territory.
Neighboring countries urged residents to take shelter as the possibility of further escalation loomed.
Earlier, the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv advised Filipinos to exercise extra caution and remain alert amid signals from Washington about possible strikes on Iran.
The Philippine Embassy in Beirut likewise urged Filipinos to “remain vigilant and exercise prudence at this time.”
