The Department of Tourism (DOT) welcomed the inclusion of Dumaguete City among Asia’s Top 4 Budget-Friendly Destinations for Affordable Retirement Living in the latest report of Investopedia.
In a statement, the DOT said the recognition underscores the Philippines’ growing appeal to global retirees.
The tourism agency noted that the citation follows the country’s recognition as Asia’s Best Retirement Destination at the TripZilla Excellence Awards 2025.
In its Feb. 10 report, Investopedia described Dumaguete as a walkable coastal community on Negros Island known as the “City of Gentle People.”
It highlighted the city’s expanding expatriate population, vibrant university culture, affordable housing and dining options, and improving healthcare facilities as factors that make it attractive to retirees on a budget.
Tourism officials attributed the distinction to strong public-private partnerships among local stakeholders and the retirement sector.
They also cited the sustained initiatives of the Philippine Retirement Authority in advancing policies and programs that support long-stay visitors and foreign retirees.
The DOT said continued international recognition strengthens the country’s position as a competitive retirement hub in Asia.
It added that accolades from global platforms help promote destinations like Dumaguete as practical yet appealing options for foreign nationals seeking quality and affordable living.
