BACOLOD CITY – The Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) has assured comprehensive security coverage for the 15,000 delegates participating in the first-ever Negros Island Region Athletic Association Meet (NIRAAM) hosted by this highly-urbanized city from March 1 to 7.
Police Col. Eugene Rebadomia, Bacolod police officer-in-charge, said more than 500 police personnel will be deployed to ensure the safety of delegates and visitors throughout the event.
He noted that security preparations were finalized following a coordination meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with the Department of Education (DepEd) and other concerned agencies.
Police Lt. Col. Joem Malong, spokesperson of PRO-NIR, said at least 145 additional personnel will augment the Bacolod City Police Office forces during the sports meet, which will be held in this city, and four other cities in Negros Occidental.
Augmentation includes 75 personnel from the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office and 25 personnel from the Regional Mobile Force Battalion (RMFB).
These forces will strengthen operational coverage and ensure effective security support across all designated areas, including playing venues, billeting quarters, and other event sites.
The security plan features heightened police visibility, strategic monitoring, and rapid response readiness.
The PRO-NIR is working closely with local government units (LGUs) and DepEd to ensure seamless coordination.
Malong said that proactive measures have been put in place to anticipate challenges, mitigate risks, and guarantee that all activities proceed safely and without incident.
Police Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, PRO-NIR director, has directed the BCPO to deploy sufficient personnel in all designated venues to deter potential crimes and maintain order. He also expressed full support for the sporting event.
Twelve provincial and city delegations are set to compete in the week-long NIRAAM 2026 with the theme “Negros Island Region: Stronger, Faster, Together” – Kabankalan City, Canlaon City, Bayawan City, Tanjay City, Bais City, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, Siquijor, Guihulngan City, Bacolod City, Silay City, and Negros Occidental.
The city government has earmarked P54.5 million for the event, allocating P24 million in financial assistance to DepEd and P30.5 million for the city’s delegation.
DepEd-Bacolod spokesperson RJ Paglomutan said 12 billeting areas and 27 competition venues have been prepared.
The opening ceremony is scheduled on March 1 at 4 p.m. at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan here.
Mayor Greg Gasataya led the send-off for 902 athletes, coaches, and trainers representing this city on Wednesday.
Each delegate received a P10,500 allowance, with coaches granted additional support. An additional P2,000 Regional Meet Allowance was also announced. Athletes were provided with training and competition uniforms, parade attire, shoes, and hoodies.
Gasataya called on the people and the business sector to extend hospitality and support to athletes and visitors.
