The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Friday, Feb. 27, kept all national roads and bridges in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) open while enforcing stricter safety measures to protect motorists.
“Motorists are advised to exercise caution at all times and strictly observe traffic and safety regulations while traveling,” the DPWH said.
Travelers to Baguio City may continue using major access roads such as Marcos Highway, Asin–Nangalisan–San Pascual–La Union Road, Benguet–Nueva Vizcaya Road, Baguio–Bontoc Road, and Baguio–Bauang Road.
Kennon Road, however, remains open only to light vehicles with a maximum load of five tons. Heavy trucks are advised to take alternative routes, particularly Marcos Highway, the agency noted.
The DPWH also reported that the temporary Acrow Bridge at Camp 2 along Kennon Road has a vertical clearance of 2.50 meters while the rockshed entrance coming from Baguio City is passable on a single lane.
The DPWH said these roads are part of the region’s main corridors connecting lowland provinces to the mountain city, which are prone to landslides and structural stress during the rainy season.
Beyond Baguio, other national roads and bridges in the Cordillera remain passable but with restrictions in several provinces.
In Apayao, sections of the Apayao (Calanasan)–Ilocos Norte Road are limited to light vehicles at Bunot Bridge 2 in Barangay Tanglagan and at Ayayao Bridge in Barangay Eva. Intermittent one-lane sections also remain in Barangays Parina, Tanglagan, and Eva due to road slips.
The Claveria–Calanasan–Kabugao Road is restricted to light vehicles at Sugoc Bridge in Barangay Ninoy. Other portions have intermittent one-lane passable sections.
Several other roads in Apayao, including the Kabugao–Pudtol–Luna–Cagayan Boundary Road, are limited to light vehicles at certain bridges and have one-lane sections due to scoured slabs and sinking roads. The Ayaga–Sta. Marcela–Flora–Lasam Road also has one-lane sections caused by road slips.
In Benguet, the Baguio–Itogon Road at Sitio Goldfield in Barangay Poblacion, Itogon operates on window hours for clearing operations and automatically closes during rain. It is passable from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m. and from 12 noon to 1 p.m., but is closed from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Portions of the Mt. Province Boundary–Calanan–Abbut Road in Kalinga are limited to light vehicles.
The Makilo Bailey Bridge in Bugnay, Tinglayan, is restricted to vehicles weighing up to five tons and does not allow long-bodied vehicles, the DPWH said.
