ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources warned people against consuming shellfish as it reiterated its red tide warning in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
The BFAR, in Shellfish Bulletin No. 4, Series of 2026, stated that shellfish collected and tested from Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur and Tantangan Bay in Zamboanga Sibugay are still positive for toxic red tide beyond the regulatory limit.
All types of shellfish and “alamang” gathered from these areas are not safe for human consumption.
Fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs, however, are safe for human consumption provided they are fresh and washed thoroughly and gills and intestines must be removed before cooking.
The BFAR advised the people to follow the bulletin to avoid complications from shellfish poisoning.
