Malabon City lone district Rep. Antolin "Lenlen" Oreta III has raised concern over the problem of obesity among Filipinos.
"Obesity is no longer just a personal health issue—it is a growing public concern that affects Filipino families across all ages, income levels, and communities," Oreta said in a statement.
"From children consuming ultra-processed snacks to adults unknowingly exceeding daily sugar, salt, and fat intake, the problem often begins not with choice—but with lack of clear information," the Metro Manila solon said.
Ortega had earlier filed in the current 20th Congress House Bill (HB) No. 6147 or the proposed "Healthy Food Environment Act". A key provision of the measure is the adoption of "Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labels (FOPNL)" on food products.
Through this, Oreta champions the maxim "Malinaw na label, mas malusog na pamilya (A clear label will result to healthier families)."
He says food product labels are meant to guide consumers, yet many are cluttered with technical terms, fine print, or misleading claims that make it difficult for ordinary Filipinos to understand what they are really eating.
When labels are unclear, families—especially parents buying food for their children—are left guessing, noted the House Committee on the Welfare of Children member.
He reckoned that having clear food product labels does not restrict the choices or burden consumers. Instead, it respects the Filipino family’s right to know.
When people understand what is in their food, they are more likely to choose better—not because they are forced to, but because they are informed, the lawmaker said.
