Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso urged the members of the real estate sector to support his administration's goal of providing proper homes to low-income Manileños on Thursday, Feb. 26, as part of his Minimum Basic Needs (MBN) agenda, alongside healthcare, education, and jobs.
Domagoso made the statement during the 1st General Membership Meeting of the Chamber of Real Estate & Builders’ Associations, Inc. (CREBA), in which he and the city government were hailed as models of good governance and the Most Outstanding LGU in providing quality housing for the public.
In his speech, Domagoso sought the backing of the real estate sector for Manila's in-city housing program as he assured them of his administration’s commitment to prudent spending, honest tax collection, and steady support for housing projects that directly improve the lives of Manila’s residents.
The mayor called CREBA officers and members that they represent “an economic driver industry,” emphasizing the impact of their work on long-term urban development.
“Reconstruction is one of the major stimulants of any country for that matter, that includes a private and a national government investment plan," he said.
Drawing from his personal experience, Domagoso recalled growing up amid housing insecurity in Tondo, saying he understands the uncertainty faced by families without stable shelter.
According to him, that experience shaped his decision to prioritize permanent, structurally sound in-city housing projects instead of temporary relocation programs far from jobs and basic services.
Domagoso also outlined the logic behind the city’s vertical housing model, including Tondominium and Binondominium projects.
“Ayaw kong magtatag ng bahay ng kalapati. Tutal mamumuhunan ka rin lang naman at ititira mo yung pamilya, hindi naman individual (I don't want to build a house that feels like it was made for birds. It will be families who will live in these houses you will build)," he said, noting the Singapore-inspired design and minimum 40-plus square meter units with two bedrooms of his housing projects.
The mayor, together with Vice Mayor Chi Atienza and Manila City Engineer Armand Andres, had recently led the groundbreaking ceremony for Binondominium 2 in San Nicolas on Feb. 24, marking the sixth vertical housing project under his administration.
He explained the 15-storey residential building will rise on a 405 square meter lot with a total floor area of 6,277.5 square meters and will accommodate 98 housing units.
Each 40 square meter unit will feature two bedrooms, a toilet and bath, a kitchen, a dining area, and a living space, designed to provide safe and comfortable living conditions for beneficiary families.
The project will also include two elevators, an office space, a daycare center, multi purpose hall, and a roof deck, along with other essential facilities aimed at supporting the daily needs and well-being of residents.
