EPD chief hails police force's security coverage during EDSA People Power anniversary
Eastern Police District (EPD) District Director Brig. Gen. Aden Lagradante lauded the professionalism and commitment of the police force during its security coverage of the 40th EDSA People Power anniversary on Wednesday, Feb. 25, stressing its commitment to ensuring peace and order as well as respecting the people's right to peaceful assembly.
In his statement on Thursday, Feb. 26, Lagradante commended all EPD officials and personnel for their coverage, saying that all operational plans were effectively implemented and properly coordinated throughout the duration of the event.
"Thousands of participants gathered to commemorate the historic anniversary, while several groups of protesters also assembled to air their grievances regarding current government issues and express their sentiments on various national concerns. The Philippine National Police (PNP) respected their right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, ensuring that democratic space was upheld while maintaining public safety," Lagradante said.
"Through intensified police visibility, strategic positioning of personnel, and close coordination with event organizers and partner agencies, the entire activity was generally peaceful and orderly," he added.
Despite reports of clashes between the protesters and the police, which led to the arrest of some protesters, Lagradante said law enforcement personnel exercised maximum tolerance while strictly adhering to established rules of engagement and crowd control protocols.
“The Eastern Police District remains committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all lawful assemblies. We recognize the people’s right to voice their concerns, and we will continue to perform our mandate with fairness, restraint, and professionalism,” the director said.
"The EPD extends its appreciation to all partner agencies, stakeholders, and the public for their cooperation, which greatly contributed to the overall success of the 40th EDSA People Power anniversary commemoration," he noted.
