The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will temporarily deploy mobile pumping stations in the San Juan River in May to help ease persistent flooding along Araneta Avenue in Quezon City.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said the mobile stations will deliver the same force and effectiveness as the planned permanent pumping station.
The permanent facility, with a P280 million budget, is scheduled for construction in 2027.
Each mobile unit costs P7 million, prompting DPWH to adopt the temporary measure to address flooding ahead of the rainy season.
Dizon also directed the regional office to acquire additional mobile pumping stations for nationwide deployment as temporary flood control measures.
The installation is part of a three-pronged strategy along G. Araneta Avenue.
This includes drainage expansion, as well as declogging and desilting of waterways, after residents reported floodwaters reaching man-height.
To ensure maximum efficiency, Prof. Mahar Lagmay, executive director of Project NOAH, will run simulations on the completed drainage system and mobile stations, as DPWH continues to strengthen its flood control measures.
