Ashfall blankets Negros Occidental following Kanlaon eruption

BACOLOD CITY – Several barangays in nine local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental experienced light to heavy ashfall following the explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Thursday night, Feb. 26.
A report from the Negros Occidental Operations Center said light to moderate ashfall was reported in Barangays San Juan and San Jose in Binalbagan, Barangays Rumirang and Guintubhan in Isabela, and Barangays Talaban, Aguisan, Saraet, Nabalian, Cabanbanan, and Libacao in Himamaylan City; light ashfall in Barangay Yubo, La Carlota City; Barangay Codcod in San Carlos City; and Kabankalan City proper; and all 24 barangays in Hinigaran; light to heavy ashfall in Barangays Cabagna-an, Robles, and Sag-ang in La Castellana; and heavy to moderate in Barangays Pandan and Antipolo in Pontevedra.
Sulfuric odor was reported in Barangay Binbuhan, Bago City; Barangay Ara-al, La Carlota City; Barangays 6, Montilla Proper, Macagahay, Odiong, and Magallon in Moises Padilla; all 24 barangays in Hinigran; Barangays Tinongan, Amin, and Maytubig in Isabela; and Barangay Codcod, San Carlos City.
The Office of Civil Defense-Negros Island Region (OCD-NIR) also reported sulfuric odor in Barangay Sibucao, San Enrique, and Barangay Minoyan in Murcia.
Shock wave was felt in Barangay Yubo, La Carlota City, Himamaylan City, and Binalbagan, which was stronger than the Dec. 9, 2024 eruption according to their local disaster risk reduction and management offices (LDRRMOs).
The OCD-NIR is coordinating with LGUs surrounding Kanlaon Volcano for impacts and incidents, along with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).
As part of the immediate response, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, where the volcano is situated, prepared responders and rescue vehicles at designated pick-up points.
The municipal government of La Castellana held emergency meetings with the local Incident Management Team (IMT), and deployed responders to upper barangays.
The municipal government of Pontevedra deployed responders to Barangay Zamora while local rescuers monitored the area for heavy ashfall.
Responders were deployed to distribute face masks and goggles in Hinigaran following the activation of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
