No classes, gov't work in some Negros Occidental LGUs for EDSA anniversary
BACOLOD CITY – Some local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental have suspended classes and government work on Wednesday to mark the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
Feb. 25 is a special working day pursuant to Proclamation No. 1006, Series of 2025, issued by Malacañang.
On Tuesday night, Mayor Ray Ruiz issued an advisory on Facebook suspending classes on all levels and work in all government offices in Candoni town.
In Isabela town, Mayor Miguel Angelo Yulo also made a similar announcement, but said "essential offices and agencies delivering basic and emergency services shall remain operational to ensure the continuous safety and welfare of our people."
Mayor Grace Arceo of Hinigaran town issued an executive order canceling classes and government work to commemorate the occasion.
"This day is set aside for reflection on the values of courage, unity, and democracy shown during the EDSA People Power Revolution," she said.
Arceo added that essential services would still be available to the public.
In La Castellana, Mayor Añejo Nicor suspended classes on all levels on Wednesday through an executive order.
Face-to-face classes were also cancelled in Hinoba-an town.
"Let us take this day to remember the courage, unity, and sacrifice of the Filipino people who stood together for democracy," Mayor Daph Anthony Reliquias said in a Facebook post Tuesday night.
He advised schools to "implement alternative learning modalities to ensure continuity of education."
In this highly urbanized city, major private Catholic schools also cancelled classes.
Among them are the University of Saint La Salle, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, and Saint Scholastica's Academy of Bacolod City.
La Consolacion College-Bacolod halted classes starting Wednesday noon.
VMA Global College and Training Centers suspended only its office operations.
On Tuesday, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will study proposals to declare Feb. 25 a non-working holiday anew since it became a special working day in 2023.
House Bill 7911 filed by Akbayan party-list lawmakers sought a regular holiday declaration to remember the peaceful uprising in February 1986. (with a report from PNA)
