Effusive eruption at Mayon Volcano enters 51st day; ash emission, lava flows continue

Effusive or non-explosive eruption at Mayon Volcano entered its 51st consecutive day on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with continued lava effusion and ash emission recorded at the summit crater, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs reported episodes of lava effusion and ash emission generating plumes that rose about 150 to 200 meters above the crater before drifting west at 12:22 a.m., 3:07 a.m., 4:32 a.m., and 4:37 a.m. on Wednesday.
Incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) locally known as “uson,” and rockfalls continue to be produced as magma steadily feeds the eruption.
During its 24-hour monitoring from 12 a.m. Feb. 24 to 12 a.m. Feb. 25, Phivolcs recorded 305 rockfall events, 15 PDCs, and three volcanic earthquakes.
Lava flows remain active on the volcano’s southern and eastern gullies, reaching up to 3.8 kilometers along the Basud Gully, 2.2 kilometers along the Bonga Gully, and 1.3 kilometers along the Mi-isi Gully.
Sulfur dioxide emission also remained high at 4,452 tons per day.
Mayon remains under Alert Level 3, indicating intensified magmatic unrest and the potential for hazardous eruptions.
Under this alert level, ongoing activity may continue to generate lava flows, collapse-fed rockfalls, and PDCs on the southern and eastern upper slopes, while possible lava fountaining or moderate explosions could affect all sectors of the volcano.
Phivolcs reiterated that entry into the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited due to the hazards posed by lava flows, rockfalls, and PDCs.
Residents within the eight-kilometer radius were likewise advised to remain prepared for possible evacuation should monitoring parameters escalate and the alert level be raised to Alert Level 4.
