EDSA @ 40 commemoration kicks off with prayer march to People Power Monument
A prayer march from the EDSA Shrine to the EDSA People Power Monument began at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, as part of the activities commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution.
Participants offered flowers and the recitation of the “Panata ng Mamamayan,” echoing the spirit of unity.
Tindig Pilipinas co-convenor Kiko Aquino Dee said the activity was parallel to the oath-taking of former president Cory Aquino in 1986.
Among those present were Leila de Lima of Mamamayang Liberal Party-list and Chel Diokno of Akbayan Party-list, along with leaders from various civic groups.
Meanwhile, Quezon City officials, representatives of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and the EDSA People Power Commission led a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to honor the legacy of the peaceful revolt that restored democracy in the country.
The Philippine National Police rendered a 21-gun salute as part of the commemoration rites.
Also present was Ramon Balang, one of the witnesses to the assassination of former senator Benigno Aquino Jr. in 1983.
Lorenzo Tañada III, president of the Liberal Party, also arrived at the monument during the program.
Organizers said the pre-program for the Trillion Peso March will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a “Salubong” at 2:00 p.m., symbolizing the meeting of EDSA veterans and the new generation of youth advocates.
The main program is scheduled at 3:00 p.m.
