The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed phases two to five of its drainage rehabilitation along G. Araneta Avenue in Quezon City in order to prevent severe flooding that in past rains rose above a person’s height.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said the project, which began in March 2025, was finished on schedule ahead of the rainy season.
The expansion upgraded the drainage system from a single 36-inch line to two new 1.5-meter lines, significantly increasing capacity along the corridor and helping manage traffic during heavy rains.
Phase one of the project along E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue is expected to be completed by May 2026.
The broader drainage improvement initiative carries a total allocation of around P500 million.
Dizon said the project forms part of the government’s nationwide “Oplan Kontra Baha” program, which includes regular declogging of drains to prevent flooding.
The DPWH is coordinating with residents and Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte to maintain the system and address gatherings near the drains that can block water flow.
“Even without a dedicated flood control budget this year, the Oplan Kontra Baha will continue across the Philippines alongside our ongoing works on G. Araneta and E. Rodriguez,” Dizon said.
