La Salle's Angel Canino (UAAP Media)
Angel Canino made sure to lead by example as De La Salle took its third straight straight-set victory for a share of lead in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament.
Driven by the mantra that action speaks louder than words, the Lady Spikers stayed true to their promise of reclaiming the glory they once had, with the 22-year-old Canino embracing her role as a vocal team captain.
“Siguro kasi mas eager kaming tapusin yung season na 'to na maganda. Hindi lang tapusin ‘yong game na maganda. So I think that's a big difference,” Canino told Tempo/Manila Bulletin.
“Before kasi medyo more on words and not on actions. Ngayon kasi pinapatunayan talaga namin na kaya din namin talagang sumabay at kayang kaya namin i-dominate ‘yong UAAP,” she added.
True enough, Canino, a Bacolod City native, has spearheaded the attack for the Taft-based squad as it listed three rousing victories at the expense of Far Eastern University, University of Santo Tomas, and on Wednesday night, the University of the Philippines via a 25-12, 25-15, 25-19 triumph at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Talagang wino-work hard din talaga namin, hindi lang ako pati narin ng buong team” the 5-foot-11 outside hitter continued.
“Hindi lang namin sinasabi lahat-lahat ‘yon, kundi ginagawa din talaga namin yung best namin na gawin yung lahat na sinasabi namin,” she added.
La Salle goes for four in a row against archrival Ateneo (0-3) this Sunday, March 1, at the Big Dome.
‘Mas malalim ang hugot’
Canino and Co. share the same vision of bringing back the title to Taft.
Last year, they came close but yielded to the Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon-led National University.
“Talagang malaki lang din talaga yung hugot namin ngayong season na to na gusto namin matapos yung season na to na maganda, which is makuha namin yung ultimate goal namin is mag-champion,” said Canino.
“Pero habang hindi pa natatapos, lalo na yung round 1, sana matuloy-tuloy namin ‘yong magandang kumpiyansa namin and matuloy-tuloy namin ‘yong magandang mindset coming to every game talaga,” she added.“‘Yon lang din yung pinaka-importante, yung mindset and saka kumpiyansa ng bawat isa.”
