Batangas 2nd district Rep. Gerville "Jinky Bitrics" Luistro says the impeachment proceedings against presidential aspirant Vice President Sara Duterte would definitely affect Filipino voters come 2028.
This, as the House Committee on Justice chaired by Luistro pencilled March 2 as the start of the deliberations on the four impeachment complaints filed against the controversial Duterte.
"Of course [it will affect voters]. Of course, because dito sa ating proceedings, mapapag-uusapan yung grounds (Of course, because in these proceedings, we will discuss the grounds), which are issues being imputed, being imputed against the Vice President," she said it a chance interview.
It was only last Feb. 18 whe Duterte announced that she would vie for the Palace seat in the May 2028 national elections.
Although the polls are still two full years away, the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) will begin on October 2027.
"We are bound to finish in a period of 60 session days ‘di ba (Aight)? Sixty session days for the justice committee. So, I don't think naman na aabutin tayo ng filing of candidacy for next year (So I don't think the hearings will reach the filing of candidacy for next year),” Luistro said.
While recognizing the possible electoral implications of the impeachment proceedings, the Batangas lawmaker stressed that the panel’s work will be guided strictly by established rules and procedures.
“We will be following strictly the rules. So, right now wala pa akong makitang challenges (I don't see any challenges). Basta (Fo sure), initially we stick to the determination of sufficiency in form. Alam niyo na yung parameters niyan. Napag-uusapan natin iyan during the impeachment against the President [Marcos]," she said.
(You know what the parameters are. We discussed this during the impeachment proceedings against President Marcos.)
The impeachment case against Marcos was ultimately dismissed.
Last Feb. 5, 2025, the House impeached Vice President Duterte outright via the fast-track mode, which skipped committee hearings entirely. The articles of impeachment sent to the Senate were eventually declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court (SC).
