PNP: Security in place for People Power anniversary, Trillion Peso March
More than 13,000 policemen will be deployed to secure the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on Wednesday, Feb. 25, which is also the schedule for the third “Trillion Peso March”, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said they will be implementing a multi-layered deployment strategy that includes deployment of anti-riot policemen, police visibility for anti-crime measures, conduct of checkpoints and border control.
For rapid response and public safety, he said the PNP has positioned 501 Quick Reaction Teams, including SWAT and EOD/K9 units, alongside 337 traffic and route security teams to manage vehicular flow and ensure safe access routes.
Covert security personnel, he said, numbering 381 are also strategically deployed to monitor potential threats discreetly.
“Our goal is to make sure that all the planned activities will be peaceful and orderly. And this is only possible through cooperation and mutual respect,” said Nartatez.
“There are no verified intelligence reports confirming any security threat but we will not lower our guard by maintaining a high level of alertness to prevent infiltration of individuals who may intend to disrupt a peaceful assembly,” he added.
The Quezon City Local Government Unit approved the conduct of the rally along White Plains Avenue, Quezon City, organized by Tindig Pilipinas, SIKLAB, and the Trillion Peso March Movement.
Organizers are set to install their stage at midnight of February 24, with program activities scheduled from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Feb. 25. No other rally permits have been granted for that date and location.
As of 5 p.m. of Feb. 21, all units of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) are under full alert status to ensure heightened readiness and seamless coordination before, during, and after the event.
Nartatez also directed Police Regional Offices nationwide to heighten alert status and implement calibrated security measures in their respective areas of responsibility.
He ordered all unit commanders to strictly enforce the maximum tolerance policy and ensure close coordination with local government units and event organizers.
Nartatez said regional directors were also tasked to activate intelligence validation teams to monitor potential agitators and misinformation campaigns. He reminded all commanders to ensure that deployments are visible yet non-intrusive.
“We are anticipating the presence of multiple groups with opposing views. While we respect their right to peaceful assembly, our primary responsibility is to ensure public safety,” he said.
