A Davao City councilor on Tuesday, Feb. 24, proposed an ordinance integrating artificial intelligence into the traffic management system and transform this city into a "smart city."
In a privilege speech during the city council's regular session, Councilor Bonz Andre Militar, chairman of the Committee on Information Technology, said the city's current traffic lights are outdated.
"They follow a fixed timer, regardless of whether there are two cars or 200 cars on the road. This wastes our time, fuel, and tests every citizen's patience," Militar said in proposing the AI traffic light system.
He added that the proposed ordinance is a core part of the city's key agenda, which aims to digitize government services and transform Davao City into a smart city.
Militar said installing AI traffic light systems can optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion by using real-time traffic analysis to prioritize traffic zone areas and adjust green light timings based on actual vehicle volume.
These, the councilor explained, are expected to eliminate unnecessary green lights on empty roads, reduce "stop-and-go" driving, and implement countdowns for drivers and pedestrians.
"When we talk about AI, it sounds like science fiction, but it is actually a straightforward, practical tool," he said, adding that the system will also detect accidents or stalled vehicles and provide emergency response assistance.
Militar said that the technology will make streets safer, reduce pollution, and improve public transport efficiency by ensuring buses arrive on time and will help people get to work, school, or home faster.
