The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has placed its troops on red alert ahead of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Padilla said the military will augment police personnel in ensuring the peaceful observance of the gathering, which will coincide with the Trillion Peso March anti-corruption protest.
“The primary agency here is really the Philippine National Police. The Armed Forces of the Philippines will play an augmenting role if needed. As early as February 21, we have already raised our status to red alert. This means our troops are already on standby for any eventuality,” she said.
Padilla clarified that the AFP’s readiness does not indicate any immediate threat to the event. The alert, he said, is an internal measure to ensure troops and equipment are properly accounted for and can be quickly mobilized.
“So far, no significant threat has been reported. But we are prepared for any eventuality to support the PNP if needed,” she said.
The AFP said that its intelligence monitoring remains active, particularly on groups previously flagged for possible disruption during the Feb. 25 activities.
To facilitate rapid deployment, command and control centers have been established by the AFP.
Units near areas requiring reinforcement can also be mobilized immediately, bringing with them both personnel and equipment.
“Deployments vary based on the roles they perform. There are instances when personnel are authorized to wear civilian clothes even during missions,” Padilla said.
Meanwhile, the AFP’s National Capital Region Command (NCRCOM) reaffirmed its respect for peaceful assembly.
“We respect the right of our fellow Filipinos to peacefully assemble and express their views, as guaranteed by the Constitution,” it said.
“The Philippine National Police is the lead agency in maintaining peace and order during public assemblies, while the AFP, through NCRCOM, stands ready to provide support upon request and in accordance with established coordination and operational guidelines,” it added.
The EDSA People Power Revolution, which toppled the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in February 1986, is commemorated annually with various gatherings, including church events, civil society programs, and public marches.
Public activities are expected across Quezon City, including the EDSA Shrine, People Power Monument, and Eton Centris, as well as key locations across the country.
“The AFP remains committed to protecting the people and securing the State, while upholding professionalism, neutrality, and respect for democratic processes,” the AFP-NCRCOM said.
