'#SIWON_OUT' trends as netizens criticize Super Junior's Siwon for social media post
Super Junior’s Siwon is in the news again not for his career but for his alleged politically charged social media post.
Netizens are trending the hashtag “SIWON_OUT” on X (formerly Twitter) to denounce Siwon and remove him from K-pop boy band Super Junior.
On Feb. 19, former Korean president Yoon Seok-yeol was sentenced to life imprisonment for insurrection after he imposed a short-lived martial law on Dec. 3, 2024.
On the same day, Siwon posted the Chinese phrase “不義必亡, 土崩瓦解” or "bul-uipal-mang, tobung-wa-hae,” according to Korean media outlet Chosun.
It explained, "’Bul-uipal-mang’ means that what is unjust is bound to perish, and ‘tobung-wa-hae’’ literally means earth collapses and roof tiles shatter, a term mainly used to refer to the collapse of an organization or state.”
This led to speculations among netizens that the post hinted at Siwon’s stance on Yoon’s sentence.
Netizens posted their comments on X with the hashtag.
“Sungmin didn't backstab SJ. if he did, then wth is siwon doing? he goes to social media to say controversial things for years. that's been damaging the group's image. last year SJ was turning 20 and he was creating controversies, now he's doing it again. #SIWON_OUT,” one wrote.
Another said, “I can't believe i'm riding this but if you go to that political concert, you better put your resignation from SJ effective immediately before you do. i don't care where you stand in life, just don't involve us or SJ in it #SIWON_OUT.”
“Blocking all the ELFs holding you accountable for your actions is crazy. You made your bed now lay in it. Stop trying to drag the others down with you. Your money can only protect you for so long #siwon_out," one commented.
SM Entertainment, Super Junior’s agency, issued a statement, saying, "We have confirmed that malicious posts, including personal attacks and insults against our artist Choi Siwon, are being written and posted. We have closely reviewed the content of the posts and attached images based on data collected through our own monitoring, and have filed a complaint with the investigative authorities regarding the confirmed criminal acts."
Siwon previously courted controversy when he posted a memorial post for American right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
Following his post, Korean far-right YouTuber and former Korean history instructor Jeon Han-gil praised Siwon for the post and invited him to a concert.
The concert, slated on March 2, is to celebrate the March First Movement in Korea. The March First Movement refers to a series of protests in Korea against Japanese colonial rule that started on March 1, 1919.
In a YouTube video, Jeon Han-gil addressed his staff, "Is Choi Siwon coming to our concert? We're in the process of recruiting him, right? Yes, so that Choi Siwon can come too..."
He also discussed Siwon’s social media post.
"Oh, yes, Choi Siwon. He's handsome. He's truly a handsome man. I'm so happy to see Choi Siwon. He's such a courageous celebrity. Isn't he a celebrity with true character? A celebrity with genuine integrity and a passionate spirit?" he said.
Jeon Han-gil added, "Shouldn't we support such celebrities so they can become truly popular and establish themselves as representative celebrities of South Korea?"
About Siwon’s social media post, he said, "That was really cool."
Jeon Han-gil interpreted the message, saying, "Injustice is doomed, and what is unjust is sure to perish. It's Lee Jae-myung and other leftist forces, or Judge Ji Gwi-yeon's wrongful sentencing. Injustice is doomed, and what is unjust is sure to perish. Then, the earth collapses and crumbles, right? So, what is unjust is doomed, and like the earth collapsing and the tiles shattering, everything will be shattered. Ultimately, what is it? It seems to be the same message that we, who pursue the truth, will win."
He invited Siwon to attend the concert, saying, “I don't know if Choi Si-won will watch, but I'm making an official proposal. What do you mean? Yes, Choi Si-won. We're having a Freedom Concert on March 2. It's at KINTEX in Ilsan, so transportation is convenient, right? It's a large-scale concert with seating for about 10,000 people. It would be a great relief if you could come, just like our name suggests."
"Our viewers, let's officially invite Choi Siwon,” he said.
