'Iron Lung': Markiplier's gripping and fearless sci-fi breakthrough

Imagine being assigned the worst job in the universe.
Written, edited, directed by, and starring Mark Fischbach (a.k.a. Markiplier) himself, ‘Iron Lung’ is a 2026 independent sci-fi horror released internationally via Encore Films and based on the 2022 game by David Szymanski.

The premise is simple and terrifying: After an apocalypse wipes out the stars, survivors send a convict to explore a desolate moon that is literally an ocean of blood.
And for two hours, you are trapped in that submarine.
This movie is a full-on, claustrophobic, hallucinating nightmare. We get brief glimpses of supporting characters early on, but once the mission begins, it’s just Simon (Markiplier) inside that rusted metal coffin, guided only by a cold voice box. If you’re not comfortable sitting in tension, this film will test you.
Markiplier’s performance is surprisingly grounded. Less loud YouTube energy, more restraint. His fear – especially during the hallucination sequences — feels raw and desperate.
Technically, this is where the film shines. The production design of the submarine interior is incredibly well done. The practical effects add grit and authenticity. Most of what you see feels tactile and real. The only extensive CGI comes from the monster itself, which, without giving anything away, resembles a nightmare-fueled gigantic anglerfish, complete with terrifying fangs.
My main gripe, however, would be the pacing. The slow burn is deliberate, but at over two hours, the repetition can feel exhausting. The plot is intentionally minimal, but that thinness makes the climax feel slightly underwhelming, especially with the last-minute monster reveal.
Still, you can’t deny the ambition. A self-made indie horror swinging this big deserves respect. It’s not perfect, but it proves that Markiplier has real potential as a filmmaker — especially if he continues sharpening his storytelling instincts.
If you’re a Markiplier fan and into claustrophobic sci-fi horror, this one’s worth diving for.
‘Iron Lung’ will premiere in cinemas on Feb. 25.
