The “Bridge of Promise” in Batangas City, which has served thousands of daily commuters but shows signs of deterioration, will be replaced with a stronger and permanent structure, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon said.
Dizon said the bridge was originally intended to be “pansamantagal” (temporarily for long) but has been in use for 17 years since it was built in 2009.
He added that a long-term solution is needed for residents traveling between Barangay Kumintang Ibaba and Barangay Gulod Labac.
The department has requested P300 million in the 2027 budget to widen and reinforce the bridge.
DPWH traffic assessments showed that over 5,000 vehicles and pedestrians use the bridge daily.
“Residents have been waiting nearly two decades for a permanent solution, and this project will finally provide a durable and safe route,” Dizon said.
Construction is expected to begin once funding is approved, using modern engineering techniques to ensure the bridge can withstand heavy traffic and environmental stress for years to come.
